Does time ever seem to stand still? Chronostasis is temporal illusion whereby the second hand of an analogue clock seems to linger far longer than a second you’re looking at it. This is because when you rapidly focus your eyes from one point to another they have a break in perception in a blind jump called a saccade. The brain erases the motion blur from the jump during those few milliseconds and replaces the image with the final image of the second hand, which seems to make it linger longer… Oh, and don’t forget to put your clocks forward today!
